Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout , NC at 7:30 this morning. Currently, sustained winds are 85mph. Further weakening is expected, but Irene is still forecast to be a hurricane until it makes a second landfall in New England.
The outer edge of the rain shield has pushed into southern and eastern Maryland and will continue to move towards the northwest and overspread the area.
Irene remains a large hurricane. Tropical Storm force winds extend 260 miles from the center and have reached the southern tip of the Delmarva. These winds will begin to affect the state within the next few hours and will last into tomorrow morning.
Hurricane force winds extend 90 miles from the center and will begin to affect Ocean City late tonight.
