Blizzard of 2016: 1/23 Update – The Storm That Won’t Quit

Snow continues to fly across most of the state, even in Ocean City, as cold air has made it to the coast. The forward movement of the low has slowed to a crawl and it’s affects are still being felt across most of the state.

Accumulating snow should continue, gradually diminishing between now and midnight across most of the state from west to east. An additional couple of inches is possible before it ends.

The storm has, for the most part, behaved as planned. Most areas have received at least what was forecast, with most exceeding the forecasted numbers. It remains to be seen if actual blizzard conditions were met, but early indications that at least Reagan National experienced blizzard conditions earlier this evening.

After over 30 hours of snow, totals range from a few inches in Ocean City, to over 30″ north and west of I-95. This will end up being a top 5 (at least) snowstorm for all three major airports.

Snowfall measurement here in Millersville
So far here in Millersville, we have reached 22.5″ and it continues to snow at a moderate to heavy clip. Measuring has been tricky due to the strong winds, so the number was determined by averaging the snow depth in various locations.

While we were getting buried with snow, the main story in Ocean City is the coastal flooding, strong damaging wind gusts to near hurricane strength as well as the battering waves. The end of the fishing pier along the boardwalk was heavily damaged and significant beach erosion has occurred. While we dig out, they will be cleaning up and repairing the damage that was caused by this storm.

Going forward, Blizzard Warnings remain in effect for all of Central Maryland as well as the Eastern Shore as winds will continue to gust through the night. They are scheduled to expire tomorrow morning. There is literal light at the end of the snow tunnel though, as sunshine is expected to return tomorrow as we all begin the daunting task of digging out from historic amounts of snow.
