Partial Clearing This Morning; Afternoon Storms

Current Surface Map

The current light rain and drizzle that is moving through the area will clear in the next few hours. This will allow partial clearing to occur, helping to destabilize the atmosphere. Thunderstorms will develop this afternoon over the mountains and move eastward into the evening.

Depending on how much clearing occurs, some of these storms could become severe with damaging winds, large hail and even an isolated tornado. Highs today will be in the mid 80s.

The cold front moves through tomorrow, bringing another round of showers and thunderstorms during the day. Highs will again be in the mid 80s.

Mostly Sunny Today, Severe Storms Possible Tomorrow

Current Surface Map
High pressure will control our weather today, bringing another mostly sunny day with temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90.

An area of low pressure will approach tomorrow and bring a cold front through the area on Wednesday. This will provide a focus for thunderstorm development tomorrow. Scattered thunderstorms are expected and some of these storms could become severe with damaging winds, large hail and even tornadoes. Highs will be in the upper 80s.

Slight Chance of Storms Today, Better Chance Tomorrow

Current Surface Map
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the mountains today and will move eastward into Central and Eastern Maryland through the afternoon and evening.

The activity will be isolated and most spots will remain dry. Any areas that do get a storm can expect brief heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Highs will be in the upper 80s.

As low pressure and a cold front approach tomorrow, rain and thunderstorm chances increase dramatically. Expect more widespread rainfall tomorrow afternoon and into the night with scattered thunderstorms as well. Some of the storms may become severe with damaging wind as the primary threat. Highs will be in the upper 80s.

Isolated Thunderstorms This Afternoon

Current Surface Map
A stationary boundary continues to bisect the state, with warm humid air to the south and east of it and slightly drier air to the north and west. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon in the muggy air, much like they did yesterday across Southern and Eastern Maryland. Today’s activity will be roughly from Central Maryland southward. Highs today will be around 90 degrees.

A cold front to our west will send areas of precipitation our way tomorrow, resulting in another day of scattered shower and thunderstorms. Highs again will be around 90.

The cold front moves closer and pushes through late Friday and Saturday. This will increase rain chances, making thunderstorms likely both days. Highs will be in the mid 80s.

Showers and Thunderstorms Likely Today

Current Surface Map
A stalling cold front just to our north will continue to be the focus for shower and thunderstorm development. A weak area of low pressure is expected to develop along the front, keeping the chance of rain in the forecast through Saturday.

Expect showers and thunderstorms to develop this afternoon. Some of the storms could produce locally heavy rainfall. Highs will push into the low 90s.

Temperatures will be about 10 degrees cooler tomorrow, with more showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Highs will top out in the low 80s.

Unsettled and Much Cooler

Current Surface Map
A cold front has brought an end to the oppressive heat wave that brought triple digit heat to the region the past week. Additionally, it has touched off showers and thunderstorms as it has moved and now stalled over the state.

Expect showers and thunderstorms to continue today, becoming more scattered this afternoon. Highs will top out in the low to mid 80s.

The front will sag further south tomorrow, lowering rain chances but an afternoon shower or storm can’t be ruled out. Highs tomorrow will be in the low 80s under partly sunny skies.

Showers and thunderstorms likely this afternoon

Current Surface Map
A cold front will move across the area this afternoon into tonight, bringing relief from the heat and humidity. Yesterday we hit 100 degrees both here and at the airport. This tied the record set in 1923.

After a low of only 78 this morning, temperatures will climb into the low 90s this afternoon. The heat and humidity will combine with the front to allow showers and thunderstorms to develop this afternoon. Some of these storms could become severe, with damaging winds and dangerous lightning as the primary threats.

The front will cross this evening and tonight, pushing the showers and storms off the coast by morning. Cooler and drier air builds in behind the front as skies clear tomorrow. Highs tomorrow and Sunday will be in the mid to upper 80s with less humidity.

Unsettled and cooler through mid week

Current Surface Map
An upper level low pressure system is currently parked over the northeast. As it spins, several disturbances will rotate around it and bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms each day through Thursday. Rain chances will be low, though and the majority of each day will be partly sunny.

Today will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 70s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and into tonight.

Tuesday will slightly cooler than today with highs in the low 70s with showers possible through the day.

Showers today

Current Surface Map
Areas of light rain and showers will continue to affect the state today, with rainfall totals up to a half inch possible. Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s.

The showers should clear out this evening, followed by decreasing clouds overnight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with highs in the low to mid 60s.

Another area of low pressure will ride along the front to our south on Saturday, bringing another round of showers to the state into Sunday morning. Highs Saturday will only reach the mid 50s, with highs near 60 expected Sunday.

Sunny and mild today, rainy weekend on tap

Current Surface Map

Today will be sunny and mild, with highs into the mid 70s. A cold front will approach from the west, reaching the state tomorrow. Ahead of the front, showers and thunderstorms will develop and move through the state tomorrow.

The front will stall along the coast as an area of low pressure moves northward along the coast. At this time, it appears the low will track close enough to the area to bring locally heavy rainfall, especially for the eastern part of the state on Sunday and into Monday.
